“How much did they pay you to give up your dream?”

What if dismissal is not an end, but an invitation? – On influence, self-reflection and finding your firepower

In the film Up In The Air , George Clooney and Anna Kendrick engage in a delicate dance of words, faces, and emotions. They’re telling people they’ve lost their jobs—one of the most difficult conversations you can have. Yet in one scene, something remarkable happens: Clooney’s character, Ryan Bingham, not only tells a man he’s being fired, but also asks him an unexpected question.

“How much did they pay you to give up your dream?”

Influencing techniques

From Loss to Desire – inspirational appeal

This sentence is a great example of inspirational appeal: calling on someone’s deepest values, dreams and passions to encourage change. Ryan reminds the man that he once wanted to be a chef, that he used to talk passionately about food. He does not speak to logic, but to the heart. By not centering the conversation around what the man loses, but around what he can find again, a new energy is created. Dismissal does not become a blow, but an opportunity.

The power of logic – rational persuasion

At the same time, rational persuasion is also used. Ryan points out that the man had been unhappy in his job for years, that he once had something else in mind, and that now – with benefits, time and space – a new step is rationally defensible. This approach shows that influencing does not have to mean manipulating: it can also mean helping someone to see the facts in a new light.

What about you?

Self-reflection with impact

What makes this scene so powerful is that the techniques of inspirational appeal and rational persuasion are not only suitable for influencing others – they are at least as valuable for yourself. Ask yourself:

  • Where did you abandon your dream for certainty?
  • What rational arguments do you use to stay in your comfort zone?
  • And what would happen if you spoke to yourself like Ryan did?

An invitation to you

This scene from Up In The Air is more than good acting. It is a mirror. It reminds us that sometimes the most difficult conversations – even those with ourselves – are exactly what we need to grow. Let yourself be inspired by your own values, be honest in your analysis, and dare to influence yourself towards that which makes your eyes sparkle again.

Perhaps today is the time to look in the mirror and search for inspiring or rational insights!
